The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is an FCI- recognized breed of dog from the USA ( FCI Group 8, Section 1, Standard No. 263 ). The breed has been the official state dog of the US state of Maryland since 1964 .

Origin and history

The breed is named after the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland / Virginia in the east of the USA . The earliest historical references date back to the 16th century. In the 19th century, however, it only really appeared in public as a hunting dog breed . They quickly became popular as hunting dogs for the swamps and waters.

description

Males are medium-sized up to 66 cm and weigh 36.5 kg, bitches a maximum of 61 cm and 32 kg. The hair should be thick and short, nowhere longer than 4 cm, with a dense, fine, woolly undercoat; the color of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever must match its working environment as closely as possible. Any color of brown, rush, or dead grass ( brown , sedge, and deadgrass ) is acceptable. The color of the eyes is very light, yellowish or amber. Solid color Chesapeakes are preferred. The hindquarters of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever may be higher than the shoulder.

use

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was bred for water hunting. He must be able to break through the ice, be able to withstand long swimming in cold water and be able to dive for the prey in order to retrieve it . In his home country he is kept as a hunting dog and as a guard dog. The breed shows protective behavior, which distinguishes it from the rest of the retriever breeds. He developed a very close relationship with "his" family, but remained a dog that was bred for work.

Diseases typical of the breed

There is a breed disposition for mucopolysaccharidosis type VI .
