The Cape Winelands , in German Cape Wine Region , Cape Wine Country or Wine Region of South Africa , formerly Boland , is a not clearly defined region in the South African province of Western Cape . It is located east of Cape Town , mostly in the Cape Winelands district .

The region includes at least the wine-growing areas around Paarl , Stellenbosch and Franschhoek . This is where most of the South African wine routes are located .

The Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve forms part of the Cape Wine Country . Its core area is around 995 km². About 320,000 people live there.
