particularities |
The Karagöl ( "Black Lake") is a crater lake at the summit Yamanlar Dağı in the province of Izmir in Turkey .
The lake is identified with the ancient Saloë Lake in the Sipylos Mountains , into the depths of which the city of Sipylos and its predecessor Tantalis , the city of the mythical wicked Tantalus , are said to have disappeared. According to Pausanias , the city was not destroyed by a volcanic eruption , as would be expected with a crater lake, rather the mountain broke, water poured from the depths and devoured the city.
