Karakudamono, also known as Kankidan

Karakudamono (aka tōgashi) are sweet Japanese dumplings . These Wagashi are known in the trade under the name seijō kankidan , contain seven different spices: sandalwood, clove, peppermint, liquorice, pepper, cinnamon. These are mixed in a base of sweet paste made from azuki beans, wrapped in a dough made from rice flour and wheat and shaped into small bags so that each bag has eight “petals” on the top, which represent an eight-lobed lotus flower . Then the dumplings are fried in sesame oil.

These so-called "balls of joy" or "buns of bliss" are of Indian origin and descend from Modaka , who is loved by the Hindu deity Ganesha .
