Caripion Melathron

The Karipion Melathron ( Greek Καρίπειον Μέλαθρον ) was the residence of the Ottoman governor for the region of Macedonia in Selânik, today's Thessaloniki .

The building was constructed by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli in the 1870s. Poselli was in the service of the Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II. In 1907 it is found in an Ottoman tax register as the residence of Abdurrahman Bey, son of Suleyman. After the Ottoman army was defeated in the Balkan Wars , the building passed into Greek ownership. In 1928 S. Nottaridis bought it for 425,000 drachmas and carried out numerous renovations inside. In 1980 the building was placed under a preservation order and the interior was restored between 1995 and 2003 by the Greek Ministry of Culture in accordance with the state of construction. Today the building houses the Institute for National and Religious Studies.
