Karl Sebastian Preis (born November 13, 1884 in Auerbach idOPf .; † May 9, 1946 ) was an SPD city councilor in Munich and founder of the municipal housing association GEWOFAG .

Life

As head of the Munich Housing and Settlement Department on the housing shortage in Munich, Karl Sebastian Preis wrote a “memorandum on the situation and elimination of the housing shortage in Munich” in 1927 and made a name for himself in the field of housing construction. The declared goal was to create enough living space for all residents in Munich and thus enable a good standard of living in the city. In his building program, which he developed on the basis of the Munich special building program initiated in 1926, he planned the construction of 12,000 apartments. For the first time, 2,055 small apartments with a living space of 40 to 50 square meters were to be built. Karl Preis wanted to curb the catastrophic hygienic conditions that prevailed in the permanently overcrowded open-plan apartments. In order to be able to carry out the work as quickly as possible, he advocates the establishment of a non-profit construction company.

Based on this recommendation, on June 6, 1928, the "Gemeinnützige Wohnungsfürsorge AG", or GEWOFAG for short, was founded. This should contribute “by promoting the building of apartments, especially inexpensive and healthy apartments for the less well-off population and members of the middle class, taking into account the needs of large families, to remedy the housing shortage and to establish decent housing conditions in Munich”. As one of the first construction projects and as the largest housing estate to emerge as part of the construction program, GEWOFAG built the Neuramersdorf housing estate from 1928 to 1930. Based on the plans by Karl Preis, 3,500 new apartments were created for families and those in need.

From 1928 until his removal from office by the National Socialists in 1933, Karl Preis remained Chairman of the Supervisory Board at GEWOFAG. In 1945, after the end of the Second World War, his offices were reassigned to him in the first session of the post-war city council. Karl Preis died in 1946 and was buried in the old part of the Munich forest cemetery. In the same year the former Melusinenplatz in Munich-Ramersdorf was renamed “Karl-Preis-Platz”.
