Karlamagnús saga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Karlamagnús saga (actually: Karlamagnús saga ok kappa hans ) is a prose compilation handed down in two versions, an older old Norwegian and a younger old Icelandic version, in the center of which is Charlemagne, who has become a legendary figure . The ten adventures are quite loosely strung together and less homogeneous than in the otherwise related Thidrek saga . Like this, however, she tells the fate of twelve companions who gather around the central figure.

A fragment from the 13th century has been preserved as the oldest textual witness, the first parchment manuscript that is almost completely preserved dates from the 14th century. The time of origin is therefore assumed to be the middle of the 13th century and thus - as in the Thidrek saga - the reign of Hákon Hákonarson .
