Carmelite Spirit

Karmelitengeist , also Karmelitergeist , is an alcohol-containing extract from various plants such as lemon balm , nutmeg , coriander , cinnamon , lemon , angelica root and other ingredients that the Carmelites of the French Abbey of St. Juste produced under the name Eau de Carmes for Charles V of France . The exact recipe was kept secret for a long time. The Carmelite spirit was used internally by taking a few drops against the threat of colds as well as for stomach and intestinal complaints. Outwardly it served as a liniment. The spirit of the Carmelite is the forerunner of the spirit of the lemon balm, which is more common today.
