Karosa ŠM 11

The Karosa series Š was the type designation for a number of buses from the Czechoslovak manufacturer Karosa . The engine, chassis, chassis and other technology were supplied by Škoda , as indicated by the Š in the names of the variants, the body was manufactured by Karosa.

The first prototypes were produced in 1961. In 1964, the first series-produced ŠM 11 city buses from the series were delivered and tested in Prague as city buses. The 11 series was the successor to the Škoda 706 RTO . Since the technology has proven itself in practice, the drive technology was adopted in the railcars of the ČSD series M 152.0 . The body of this series was adopted for the Škoda T 11 trolleybus , which was produced in small numbers, and the necessary electrical equipment was added from Škoda.

The buses have a self-supporting body made up of six prefabricated components. A Škoda ML 630 diesel engine is installed under the floor between the axles. The gearbox is a Praga 2M 70 with hydraulic converter . The buses have compressed air suspension with automatic height adjustment. The doors are operated electro-pneumatically. The side parts are made of sheet steel, the lower side parts and the ceiling are made of aluminum sheet.

From row 11 four models were manufactured. The letter after Š indicates the intended use. The number 11 or 16.5 on the length in meters.

  • ŠM 11: City bus ( m ěstský autobus) with 3 doors
  • ŠL 11: version for regular transport ( l inkovy autobus) with 2 doors
  • ŠD 11: coach ( d álkový autobus) with one door
  • ŠM 16.5: articulated vehicle, 16.5 meters long, 4 doors, more powerful engine

All buses had panoramic windows on the upper roof pillars. They are 2.50 m wide and have a height of 2.985 m. The wheelbase between the first and second axles is 5.50 meters. The ŠM 11, ŠL 11 and ŠD 11 have 180 hp, the Šk 11 200 hp. The fuel consumption is between 28 and 38 liters per 100 km, the top speed between 65 and 100 km / h.
