As Karpathentaktik the first time in was Karpathenschlacht when Russian troops watched method called, infantry masses in always new rows inserted or waves entgegenzutreiben the opponents.

The tactical approach that despised human life made a deep impression on the German and Austrian officers , who had no experience of the wear and tear or material battles that did not arise until a year later . Extremely high losses were the inevitable consequence of such an approach. The introduction of machine guns had already shown during the Russo-Japanese War of 1905 that attacks by dense infantry masses were no longer promising and regularly ended in slaughter. This procedure was also used repeatedly by the Red Army during World War II .

Since the attack method of the Russian troops could not be described with a common term, the term Carpathian tactics was coined in Germany and Austria in early 1915 and used until the end of the Second World War.
