The Kazan Cathedral

The Cathedral of the Mother of God Icon of Kazan ( Russian Собор в честь иконы Божией Матери Казанская ) is a Russian Orthodox church building in Kazakh Almaty . The cathedral was built between 1889 and 1898 and is located north of the city center.

history

A predecessor to the Kazan Cathedral was built in 1857 only three years after Almaty was founded as the Church of St. Sophia . On November 25, 1864 it was decided to move the church to a new location and to rename it in honor of Our Lady of Kazan. The move to the new location was completed on November 13, 1871. In 1887 the church building was destroyed by an earthquake .

The current church building was built between 1889 and 1898. The consecration by the bishops of Tashkent and Turkestan took place in 1901. On March 22, 1934, the cathedral was closed and the building was transferred to a farm. It was only returned to the Russian Orthodox Church on December 16, 1944. This made the Kazan Cathedral one of the first church buildings in Alma-Ata to be returned to the church. In 1953 a chapel was added to the main building, which was consecrated to St. George .

After 1991, repair and restoration work was carried out on the cathedral for several years. To date, the Kazan Cathedral is the oldest of the Orthodox church buildings in Almaty and one of the oldest preserved buildings in the city.
