A Kaschemme (often derived from Romani katsima for tavern, tavern) originally referred to a notorious inn . Siegfried Heusinger, on the other hand, traces the term back to the Polish word for pub or tavern, karczma .
The term originated in the 19th century and refers to hostels , hotels and sometimes residential buildings .
