Walls and fortress gate on the bank of the Vrbas

The Kastel ( Serbian - Cyrillic Кастел ) is a fortress on the Vrbas in the city center of Banja Luka in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

There is little evidence of who and when this structure was built, but there are indications that the foundations were laid as early as the time of the Roman Empire . In the course of time, the building was adapted by the respective ruling peoples for their purposes. It is assumed that today's Kastel only takes up a quarter of the originally built-up area. The outer walls of the fort are made of stone. There are loopholes on the top, which indicates a past as a military object. Archaeological finds from Roman times corroborate the suspicion that the castle was actually used as a Roman fort .

The building complex has been partially reconstructed since 2012.
