The Kastel Favieros ( Greek Κάστρο του Φαβιέρου = Kastel des Fabvier ) is a fortification on the isthmus of Methana . It lies at the highest point (71 m) of the isthmus. The castle has a width of about 20 m. To the south towards the mainland, a gate opens in the middle of the wall, which is flanked by two round towers about 5 m in diameter at each corner. The north side of the castle is badly damaged. The side walls are still around 15 m long.
history
424 BC During the Peloponnesian War , the Athenian Nikias landed on Methana and built a castle on the isthmus and 400 m to the north at the narrowest point an approximately 200 m long barrier wall. He left some armed forces here for defense. The barrier wall was restored in Roman times.
In 1826, during the Greek Revolution , the French general and philhellene Charles Nicolas Fabvier built a new fortification on the ruins of the ancient castle. He also had the barrier wall repaired. He is also said to have planned to found a place in Taktikoupoli , but he was previously recalled. The town of Taktikoupolis was actually founded 1.5 km southeast of the castle.
