The box chest (also called box chest armor ) is a German form of plate armor from the first half of the 15th century .

When the first full armor appeared at the end of the 14th century , they were initially quite rough and angular. So it is not surprising that the first breastplates were known as “chest breasts” in the German-speaking world. These early breastplates tapered abruptly towards the waist , which was considered fashionable in late 14th century Europe. As early as the first half of the 15th century, plate armor with rounded shapes began to appear in Italy. The Italian armor tends to be more asymmetrical than those produced in the Holy Roman Empire . Their massive appearance was characteristic.

The chest chest was widespread in the Holy Roman Empire before the Gothic plate armor was invented.

Preserved copies

Only two pieces of armor of this type have survived to this day. One of them, made around 1440, is exhibited in the Vienna Museum .

In the Berlin armory , another breastplate could be identified as a box breast. In 1906 the Museum of German History in Berlin (now the German Historical Museum ) acquired a breastplate from the Toerring Armory at Jettenbach Castle , which was dated around 1520 and has been kept in the depot ever since. In September 2007, during research in the armory depot, the strange piece was noticed. The breastplate was photographed and measured. When analyzing the images, it became clear that the present object is an early example of a box breast from the 1430s.

The chest is depicted on many paintings, illustrations and statues from the first half of the 15th century.
