Katharinenkirche Reutlingen

The Katharinenkirche is a neo-Gothic church in Reutlingen in Baden-Württemberg . It was the first Protestant church in Reutlingen since the Reformation.

history

Built as a cemetery chapel from 1887 to 1890 by the Stuttgart architect Heinrich Dolmetsch on the Unter den Linden cemetery , it replaced the old Katharinenkapelle, whose existence is documented as early as 1338. Only the tombstone of Major Johannes Jakobus, dating from 1731, found its way into the new Katharinenkirche. After the great city fire of 1726, he did a great job in rebuilding Reutlingen. Considerations to include the choir of the old Katharinenkapelle in the new building were not implemented. The Katharinenkirche has been used as a parish church since 1908.

The Katharinenkirche is characterized by its largely unchanged appearance from the time it was built. Only the choir windows, which were lost during the Second World War, were renewed. This means that the Katharinenkirche in Reutlingen is one of the few monuments from the period of "historicism" that has been passed down almost unadulterated. In contrast to most other buildings from the end of the 19th century, even the stencil painting inside was able to be preserved in its original substance. The extremely rich sculptural and ornamental design of the church may, in the spirit of Heinrich Dolmetsch, lay claim to craftsmanship originality. The neo-Gothic of the late 19th century, defamed for decades as "carpenter's Gothic ", is now recognized as an artistically independent epoch. The Katharinenkirche was therefore also entered in the list of cultural monuments.

Interior of the Katharinenkirche Reutlingen

From the beginning of 2011 to the summer of 2012, the church was renovated and refurbished, especially on the roof. The roof structure was strengthened and the roofing was renovated with zinc rhombuses. For the elaborate work on the zinc diamonds, the executing Flaschnerei Huber from Kißlegg won the nationwide renovation award in the metal division in 2013. The historic zinc diamond cover preserved at the Katharinenkirche Reutlingen is unique in southern Germany.

In a new construction phase from May to mid-September 2017, new lighting was installed in the interior and a more effective heating system that was gentle on the organ.

The church is used for church services, especially on Sundays at 11:15 a.m., and for various cultural events.
