Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter ( English St. Peter's Cathedral Basilica ) is a Roman Catholic Church in London in Ontario , Canada . The cathedral of the diocese of London is dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter and also has the title of a minor basilica .

Predecessor churches

The parish known today as St. Peter was founded on August 10, 1834 and its first wooden church was built. A priest previously traveled to the area to celebrate mass for Catholic residents.

The church was dedicated to St. Lawrence and could accommodate up to 180 people. The church was burned in April 1851. It was replaced by a new brick church in 1852.

The Diocese of London was founded in 1856 by Pope Pius IX. created. Bishop Pierre-Adolphe Pinsoneault chose St. Laurentius as the cathedral and renamed it St. Peter. In 1859 he moved the headquarters to Windsor, before his successor John Walsh reversed this in 1868.

Bishop John Walsh initiated a new building that began in 1880 under the architect Joseph Connolly . The new cathedral was completed in the neo-Gothic style by 1885 and was consecrated on June 28th of that year. The first stained glass windows were installed in 1889, the completion of the church furnishings lasted until 1926, when the Casavant Frères organ with three manuals and over 3000 pipes was installed.

In 1958 the church towers, the Marienkapelle and the sacristy were added. The Cathedral of St. Peter received on December 13, 1961 by Pope John XXIII. additionally awarded the title of a minor basilica.
