Cathedral in Rostov-on-Don

prehistory

At the end of the 18th century, after a large-scale relocation of soldiers, citizens and merchants to freedom, it was decided to build a church of the Nativity of the Holy Mother of God in the same settlement near today's central market. The foundation stone was laid on February 20, 1781, so that the church could be opened on September 5, 1781. However, on December 27, 1791, the church burned down after being struck by lightning.

The then mayor, the merchant MP Naumow, applied to Metropolitan Gabriel, the head of the Yekaterinoslav diocese , who was responsible for the present Rostov region at the time, to build a new church. In 1795 the Church of the Nativity of the Holy Mother of God was built on the same site, which initially had commercial status. Another church, called the Warm Church of the Three Saints, was located on its territory. In 1822 the church became a cathedral by a decree of the Holy Synod.

history

Due to the rapid population growth of the city, the construction of the new stone church was approved in 1854. Before that, there was a church with wooden domes on the site.

The cathedral was built in the period from 1854 to 1860 according to the design of the architect Konstantin Andrejewitsch Thon and externally resembles other churches that were built according to his designs: the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow , the memorial church of the Semenov regiment in St. Petersburg and the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Petrozavodsk .

The main curator of the building was the church mayor Konstantin Michailow-Nefjedow. At the expense of the hereditary honorary citizen of Rostov, IS Panchenko, the walls of the cathedral were painted, icons were bought, a precious church fence was made and valuable crosses were placed on the domes.

In 1887 a four-story bell tower was built.

In 1937 the cathedral was closed, and a zoo, and later a warehouse, was located on its territory. In the 1940s, the upper floors of the bell tower were destroyed.

During the German occupation, the cathedral reopened in 1942. In 1950 the paintings in the cathedral were restored, in 1988 the interior of the church was reconstructed.

For the 250th anniversary of the city of Rostov-on-Don in 1999, the bell tower was restored to its original form.
