The Catholic University Youth of Austria (KHJÖ) was launched in Salzburg at Pentecost in 1946 on the initiative of the Vienna student chaplain Karl Strobl with the participation of students from the universities of Graz, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna and positioned as a student division of the Catholic Action .

society

The association is a community of students in the Catholic Church in Austria. It is registered as an independent association and a lay organization of the Catholic Church. At the international level, the KHJÖ is a member of JECI-MIEC ( International Young Catholic Students ).

The aim is to go through life with an open mind and to deal critically and constructively with current issues of social, educational and church politics . As such, it seeks confrontation and dialogue with the church as well as with politics and the media. In this attitude she faces the fields of tension between science and faith, knowledge and conscience, church and society, religion and peace, economy and politics, progress and responsibility for creation.

What is important to KHJÖ is dealing with the past, concentrating on the present and looking to the future. Social and political engagement, a vigilant view of where discrimination is happening and actively taking action against it form the cornerstones of their actions.

As a student organization, the KHJÖ is also involved in educational policy. The members of the KHJÖ see education in its whole human dimension, interdisciplinary work and constructive examination of scientific content are the basis for this.

The activities and program of the KHJÖ are based on these requirements.

Basic principles

  • The common center of the members of the KHJÖ is the Gospel and the celebration of the Eucharist.
  • The members of the KHJÖ do not only pursue their studies in their own interests, but as a basis for the perception of social responsibility.
  • The members of the KHJÖ know they are jointly responsible for religious, scientific, cultural and social awareness-raising in society.

University locations

There are currently active KHJÖ groups at the following university locations:

  • Graz
  • innsbruck
  • Leoben
  • Linz
  • Salzburg
  • Vienna

With the exception of Vienna, the KHJÖ groups cooperate closely with the Catholic university communities of the respective university locations and in most cases also de facto form their active, binding core. In this way, the KHJÖ also proves to be a connecting element between the Catholic university communities in Austria. In addition, the KHJÖ seeks and maintains contacts with Christian student organizations with a similar profile abroad, especially in Eastern European countries.
