History of each hospital

The new operator Helios Klinikum Duisburg has summarized the careers of the St. Johannes Hospital, the Marien Hospital and the Rhine Clinic on display boards on its website.

Sale to Helios

The economic situation of the KKD worsened at the beginning of the 2010s. Even mass layoffs at the end of 2010 did not help to save the hospital. In November 2011, Helios Kliniken, part of the Fresenius health care group, took over 51% of the shares in KKD. The remaining 49% of the KKD hold a joint company of the diocese of Essen and the church St. Elisabeth GmbH. According to the Helios Group, at the time of this takeover, the four hospitals belonging to the Catholic Clinic were facing bankruptcy.

In the course of the renovation, the St. Barbara Hospital was closed and the department that was last located there was relocated to the St. Johannes Hospital in July 2013. In 2017 the new building of the Helios Marien Clinic was opened, at the same time hospital operations in the St. Vincenz Hospital were discontinued.
