The St. Barbara Hospital was a hospital and a specialist clinic in the Neumühl district of Duisburg . The hospital was specialized in the areas of dermatology , plastic surgery , rheumatology and coloproctology ( rectal diseases). The hospital was run by the Duisburg Catholic Clinic .
history
Construction work began in spring 1905; April 1, 1906 is the official opening date of the St. Barbara Hospital. Due to a particularly high number of meningitis cases (meningitis) in Hamborn , operations began on January 8, 1906. At this point the hospital was not yet finished.
In 1999 the hospital became part of the Catholic Clinic Duisburg (KKD). In November 2011 the Helios Group took over 51 percent of the shares in KKD.
In the course of the economic redevelopment of the KKD, the St. Barbara Hospital was closed and the departments that were last located there were transferred to the St. Johannes Hospital in Duisburg-Hamborn on July 1, 2013 . The empty building was returned to the Neumühler parish Herz Jesu or to the diocese of Essen .
In August 2014, in talks between the city of Duisburg and the responsible district government in Arnsberg, a conversion of the building as an emergency shelter for asylum seekers was discussed.
In the winter of 2016, the asylum seekers were expelled from the hospital. Thereafter, it was planned to demolish part of the hospital and build offices or houses on it and convert the rest of the building into a kindergarten.
In November 2018, Radio Duisburg reports that the former hospital is to become the center of a new residential area. Around 350 new apartments are to be built on the 45,000 square meter area.
