The museum was established in 1966. In 1967 the first exhibits were shown in the Świdnica City Hall. The exhibition is dedicated to the commercial traditions of Świdnica. The collection was created thanks to the help of other Lower Silesian museums.

The museum consists of four sections:

  • The old business
  • The old weights and measures
  • The story of Świdnica
  • The Department of Science and Education

The department for the commercial sector shows old scales, cash registers, company signs, packaging made of glass, ceramics and tin for tobacco and tea, as well as complete restaurants, colonial shops and pharmacies.

The department for old weights and measures shows old weights, measuring tools, calipers, measuring jugs and tools for calibrating measuring devices. The oldest exhibits include the scale by IC Simon from Breslau from the 18th century and the only surviving example of the scale with parallel guidance of the bowls by means of intersecting axes from the Johann Rademacher company in Berlin.

The history of Schweidnitz is shown in the late Gothic hall of the councilors under a cross vault with frescoes (around 1538). A model from the 17th century shows the city with its fortifications, gates and bastions. In the next room there are casts of the grave slabs of the founders of the Duchy of Schweidnitz : Bolko I. von Schweidnitz-Jauer and his grandson Bolko II the Little one .

The Department of Science and Education is responsible for organizing school visits, temporary exhibitions and media contacts.

The monument to Maria Cunitz is in front of the museum building .
