The Caucasian-Mohammedan Legion was a volunteer unit of the German Wehrmacht . The unit consisted of representatives of the Muslim populations of the North Caucasus and Azerbaijan

history

The formation of the Legion began in December 1941 near Warsaw from prisoners of war from the Caucasus . Initially, the Legion consisted of three battalions, which were commanded by a Captain Gutmann.

The unit was established in December 1941 as the Caucasian-Mohammedan Legion (Muslim Caucasus Legion) and in 1942 it was split into three separate legions, the North Caucasian Legion , the Mountain Caucasus Legion and the Azerbaijani Legion .

The legion consisted of eight battalions with the numbers 800, 802, 803, 831, 835, 836, 842 and 843 as well as the special association miner .
