The Kauri Museum is a museum in Matakohe in the Northland region of New Zealand . It is dedicated to the kauri tree and the fossil kauri resin that originated from it, as well as the pioneering days of New Zealand.

exhibition

The tour of the museum begins in the "Vounteers Hall", in which a 22.5 m long longitudinal section of a large kauri tree is set up. A front wall shows the diameter of the largest historical and living kauri trees. The room also houses a photo exhibition, the table of one of the Governors General of New Zealand, and a replica of a wood workshop.

In the neighboring hall there is a steam-powered sawmill in which kauri trees were cut. Various machines related to the Kauri wood industry are also on display. The rear part of the hall is occupied by the Otomatea Boarding House . This house, which opened in 2006, was modeled on the boarding houses of the Kaipara District around 1910. Historical furniture is set up in the rooms of the house, scenes from the life of that time are reproduced with dolls, in which such accommodations on the coast served the ship travelers as accommodation. A side wing of the sawmill shows various machines from the pioneering days such as milking machines, devices for shearing sheep, a firewood saw and a Caterpillar Cat 60 tractor from 1929.

The Smith wing of the museum displays equipment for felling and transporting the kauri trees and for extracting kauri resin. A blacksmith's workshop has been set up in one corner of the room.

In the adjoining Sterling wing, a mansion from around 1910 with furniture from this period and dolls is shown in 6 rooms. The Tudor Collings and Ross wings display furniture, paneling and carvings made from kauri wood, clothing and textiles and trophies from horse races.

In the basement of the museum is the amber room with the world's largest collection of raw and cut pieces of kauri resin and objects made of kauri resin.

Items made from fossil kauri wood and kauri resin can be purchased in the museum shop.

Outdoor area

On the outside there is a fully furnished, listed school building that was used from 1878 to 1972. The historic post office of Matakohe has an exhibition of telephones. It was the municipality's post office from 1908 to 1988. A 45,000-year-old Kauri trunk and a cable winch are on display in the outdoor area. Across the street from the main entrance is the Kauri church, built in 1867, which was used as a school, community room and church primarily by Methodists and Anglicans and is still used today for special occasions.
