Matakohe is a small settlement in the Kaipara District of the Northland regionon the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The settlement is located around 35 km southeast of Dargaville on the Matakohe River , a tributary of the Arapaoa River , which flows into Kaipara Harbor . The Hukatere Peninsula extends from Matakohe in a south-easterly direction and delimits the north-eastern part of Kaipara Harbor .

The New Zealand State Highway 12 leads north to Matakohe and connects the settlement with Ruawai , around 15 km west and Paparoa , around 6 km northeast.

history

The area around Matakohe was first settled by Europeans in 1863 when members of the Albertlander religious group arrived in New Zealand. The land was made arable for cropland and pasture by slash and burn . A monthly, later weekly ship connection brought mail and a road was built to Paparoa . In 1881 the longest quay of 440 m in Kaipara Harbor was built in Matakohe for the steamers . The Minnie Casey served Matakohe in the 1880s, the SS Ethel , then the SS Tangihua in the 1890s.

The extraction of fossil kauri resin came up around Matakohe between 1867 and 1970. A flax mill for processing New Zealand flax was built in 1870. However, it did not work economically and was soon converted into a sawmill. This was replaced by a larger sawmill in the 1880s, which burned down in 1906.

In 1902 there were two boarding houses, a library, shops and a warehouse, a church and a school.

In the early 20th century, the dairy industry gained in importance. Growing apples was initially successful but was abandoned around 1935 due to the Great Depression and mismanagement. In 1920 the entire road network of the settlement and its surroundings, over 85 km long, was graveled and paved. The local limestone deposits were used for this. The connection to Dargaville was improved by a road opened in 1927 via Ruawai , which replaced the old, further inland road.

population

In the 1890s the population of the settlement rose from 93 to 231 and the parish was designated as "the most important place in Otamatea County ". In 1906 the population rose to 264 and then fell to 141 by 1921. At the 2013 census, the village had 63 inhabitants.

Education

The Matakohe School in the settlement is a co-educational elementary school for grades 1 to 8. In 2016 the school had 65 students. There was a school in Matakohe from 1870. She initially used an anteroom of the church and then moved into the church room while a school building was being built.

Attractions

The Kauri Museum in Matakohe is dedicated to the history of the area's logging industry based on the felling of kauri trees .
