The Kavuk is a variant of the turban .

Since the introduction of the kavuk by Sultan Selim I in the early 16th century, the kavuk has changed shape, dimensions, color and decoration again and again. In the Ottoman Empire , the shape and color of the kavuk were a sign of the social class to which the bearer belonged or which office he held. In 1842 the kavuk was replaced by the fez in a dress reform of Sultan Mahmud II .
