from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kaygusuz Abdal (d. 1444 ) was a Sufi poet and the founder of the Alevi - Bektashi literature. He was born in the second half of the 14th century. There are no sources about his life. What is known about him was probably not recorded until 150 years after his death. Thus is his real name Gaybi and he was the son of the Bey of Sanjak Alaiye ( Alanya ). He had enjoyed a good education and was an incomparable pehlivan (wrestler), rider, archer and swordsman. During a hunt while chasing a deer, he came to the dervish convent of Abdal Musa in Elmalı and became its murid . After confusion and disputes, he served Abdal Musa for 40 years. Kaygusuz Abdal is said to have performed the Hajj and traveled to numerous countries and cities.

From one of the poems by Kaygusuz Abdal it is concluded from the mention of Alâyi that his real name was Alâeddin, but this is only a nispe (nickname) that gives information about his origin.
