The Kebira Crater ( Arabic فوهة كبيرة) is an approximately 31 km large crater structure in the Sahara on the border between Libya and Egypt . It was discovered in 2006 while evaluating satellite images.

Farouk El-Baz and Eman Ghoneim from the Center for Remote Sensing at Boston University had suggested that this could be an impact crater . There is still no scientific evidence for the impact theory. Alternatively, a hydrothermal (volcanic) origin is suggested.
