The Keewatin District (English. District of Keewatin ) is part of the Canadian territory of Nunavut .

In 1869, the Canadian federal government bought their territories from the Hudson's Bay Company and incorporated them into their federal territory with the Manitoba Act in 1870 . With the Manitoba Act, the new province of Manitoba was created, but the much larger part was initially co-administered by its capital Winnipeg as Northwest Territories. With the Keewatin Act of April 12, 1876, the Keewatin Territory was split off from the Northwest Territories and also administered from Winnipeg.

The new territory initially comprised the present-day areas of much of Manitoba , northwestern Ontario and southern Nunavut. In 1881 parts of Keewatin went to Manitoba, in 1889 more to Ontario, and in 1905 the rest of Keewatin was reintegrated into the Northwest Territories as a district. In 1912 another area was given to Manitoba and Ontario.

In 1999 the new territory of Nunavut was split off from the Northwest Territories, and with it the part of the Keewatin District that had remained until then.
