Wedge formation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The wedge formation is an attack formation. The acting forces are set up in a wedge or V shape. If the tip of the wedge can break through the enemy line, the breakthrough will be extended by the subsequent attackers. Attacks by the following forces divert the opponent's attention from the tip and protect it.

The tactic is based on momentum and penetration. When the wedge tip is stopped, the wedge formation can be encircled. See also armored wedge .
