Kelsang Wangmo
Kelsang Wangmo (born 1971 in Rhineland ) is the first (and until 2016 only) woman who received the title of Geshe (in 2011) in Tibetan Buddhism . Kelsang Wangmo - her Tibetan name - was born in 1971 as Kerstin Brummenbaum in the Rhineland ( Germany ).
Earlier life
She grew up in a Roman Catholic family in Lohmar , a small town between Cologne and Bonn . After graduating from high school, she decided to travel for a year before deciding to study. Her journey went from Egypt to Israel (where she lived in a kibbutz ) via Turkey to Cyprus, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan until it finally ended in Dharamsala (India).
Buddhist life
In 1991 she was ordained a Buddhist nun. She later enrolled in the traditional Geshe curriculum at the Institute for Buddhist Dialectics (IBD) in Dharamsala, where she studied Tibetan philosophy for 17 years . Since 2004 she has been teaching Buddhist philosophy in English in Dharamsala.
