Kemal Alemdaroğlu

Kemal Alemdaroğlu (born February 13, 1939 in Trabzon ) is a Turkish professor and doctor of medicine. For a while he was the director of Istanbul University .

Life

In 1962 Alemdaroğlu graduated from Istanbul University Medical Faculty. 1967 became a specialist in surgery and 1972 a lecturer. In 1978 he completed his habilitation. In 1982 he was appointed dean of the Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty . Alemdaroğlu became rector of Istanbul University on December 31, 1997. Alemdaroğlu, who describes himself as a social democrat, gained notoriety throughout Turkey because he was the first rector to speak out against the headscarf at universities. He wrote the quote: If the Türban headscarf is released, Turkey will be hell . The then President Ahmet Necdet Sezer suspended him from his post on charges of plagiarism and corruption. Alemdaroğlu was arrested by anti-terrorist police units on March 21, 2008 in connection with the Ergenekon investigation.
