Kereken

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kereken are a small indigenous people from the Far East of Russia who settle on Cape Navarin in the far east of the Chukchi Peninsula . Like the neighboring peoples, the Kereken live mainly from reindeer hunting and practice shamanism .

The ethnic group is acutely threatened with extinction: while the census of 1897 registered 102 Kereken, in 2002 there were only eight and in 2010 only four people. The Kereks increasingly assimilated the neighboring Chukchi , especially in the 20th century .

The Kerekian language is in all likelihood already dead, even if 10 speakers were registered in the last census, but who probably do not speak the language completely or not at all.
