The Kerlingarfjörður is a fjord in the Westfjords of Iceland .
The fjord is located in the north of the Breiðafjörður , is barely three kilometers wide and extends about seven kilometers into the country. The narrow Mjóifjörður branches off in the fjord . Kerlingar is the Icelandic word for women or old women . On the west bank the Vestfjarðavegur runs 
around the Litlanes headland . Opposite is the Skálmarnes peninsula .
