The Kori nuclear power plant ( Korean 고리 원자력 발전소 ) in Kori, Kyongnam , Busan in South Korea consists of nine blocks with pressurized water reactors . Right next to the four Kori reactor blocks are five other reactor blocks, which are known as Shin-Kori ( "New Kori" ).

Of the total of ten power plant units, one has already been shut down, six are in operation and three units are still under construction.

Kori

The reactor block 1 was shut down on June 18, 2017. In this context, South Korean President Moon Jae-in announced a phase-out South Korean nuclear phase-out by 2057 . The corresponding timetable provides for the shutdown of the remaining three Kori blocks in the years 2023 to 2025.

Reactors 3 and 4 were built together with Yeonggwang 1 and 2 and Uljin 1 and 2 as part of the second phase of the Korean nuclear program. The reactors all went into commercial operation between 1977 and 1986.

Shin-Kori

The Shin-Kori-1 & -2 reactor blocks are pressurized water reactors with a gross output of 1,044 and 1,046 MW . Construction of Unit 1 began on June 16, 2006, and was first synchronized with the power grid on August 4, 2010. After the construction of Unit 2 began on June 5, 2007, it went online on January 28, 2012.

Shin-Kori-3 to Shin-Kori-5 are to be pressurized water reactors of the APR-1400 type, each with a gross output of 1,400  MW . Construction on Block 3 began on October 16, 2008. Construction work on Block 4 began on September 15, 2009. Unit 3 went online in 2016 and now has a nominal output of 1,485 megawatts, making it one of the ten most powerful reactor units in the world . Construction of units 5 and 6 began in 2017 and 2018.
