Chain index

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A chain index or chain index is a certain type of index that results from the temporary linkage (multiplication) of the sub-indices ( growth factors ).

These chain indices each refer to the previous year and thus they have an annually changing weighting pattern. A characteristic of chain indices is that any 2-period comparison (between and ) is generated indirectly, i.e. as the product of the sub-indices for each year, and not directly, i.e. only with the participation of data from the periods and (for example, as in a direct volume or price index ). For illustration, this index is related to a certain reference year (for example:) . However, this should not be confused with the previous price base year (for the fixed price calculation ).
