Game description

This section is intended to give a rough overview of the game and not to explain the complete set of rules. Therefore, the following sections can present some rules in a generalized or simplified manner. The current set of rules can be viewed on the official website.

Goal of the game

In KeyForge players use their decks to generate Æmber and prevent his opponent from doing the same. Keys can be forged with the help of the mber. Whoever forges his third key first wins the game.

Game setup and cards

A deck consists of 37 cards. The player places the avatar card in front of him. One side of the card shows a picture of the Archon, while the other side shows a full card list of the cards in the deck. Collected Æmber is placed on this card and represents your own mber supply.

The remaining 36 cards are shuffled and placed next to the avatar card as a draw pile. They are divided into 3 factions with 12 cards each. The cards also differ based on their card type. There are creatures, artifacts, action cards and upgrade cards. Most cards can also trigger effects, which are described in more detail in the card text. In addition, creatures can harvest Æmber or fight. Upgrade cards are placed behind creature cards and improve them. Action cards have a one-time effect and are then discarded while artifact cards remain in the game and can be used permanently.

Train overview

The players take turns playing. A move consists of 5 steps, which must be dealt with in the following order: 1. Forge keys, 2. Select faction, 3. Play, use and discard cards, 4. Prepare cards, 5. Draw cards.

1. Forge keys
If there are enough Æmber in your own supply at the start of your turn , the active player must forge a key. A key usually costs 6 Æmber .
2. Select parliamentary group
The player must choose a faction. This affects which cards he can play in the next step. If the player has already created an archive, he can now decide to take it into his hand. The archive can only be created using card effects.
3. Play, use and discard cards
In this step the player can play, use or discard any number of cards of the chosen faction. The order does not matter. There are also no costs for playing cards.
Cards are played by placing them in the play area by hand. Creature and artifact cards come into play exhausted; H. they are turned by 90 ° and placed in the play area and can only be used on the next move. Action cards are discarded after the effect has been resolved.
Cards in the play area can be used as long as they are not exhausted. Creatures can harvest and fight. When a creature harvests, the player takes an Æmber from the general supply. If he decides to fight one of his creatures, he chooses one of the opponent's creatures to fight. Both deal damage to each other based on their strength minus any shields. If the damage exceeds the current strength value, the creature is discarded. In addition, the player can use cards to trigger printed actions. After the player uses a card, the card is exhausted. It is turned on its side by 90 °. Exhausted cards cannot be used again.
It is also possible to place cards in this step. To do this, the card is put out of hand on the discard pile.
4. Make cards ready to play
In this step the cards are made ready to play again by "standing up" exhausted cards.
5. Draw cards
In the last step the player draws cards from his draw pile until he has 6 cards in hand again.

The turn ends and it is the next player's turn.
