Keyhan ( Persian كيهان Keyhān , "Universum", also Kayhan ) is an Iranian daily founded in 1942 and based in Tehran .

history

It was founded in 1942 during the time of the Shah by Abdul-Rahman Faramarzi and Mostafa Mesbahzadeh (1908-2006) as the most important publication of the associated publishing group. Before the overthrow of the Shah, Mesbahzadeh went into exile in Paris with his family in 1978. The newspaper continued to operate until Khomeini's return in March 1979.

After the Islamic revolution , the new government brought the newspaper under their control and it has been loyal to the Islamist government ever since. It is headed by Hosein Schariatmadari as editor-in-chief. It appears daily, has a circulation of 70,000 and has up to 1,000 employees worldwide. Kayhan also publishes several foreign language editions, including the English language Kayhan International . The newspaper is under the control of the Guardian Council .

Newspaper founder Mesbahzadeh has been publishing a dissident newspaper in Persian from London, the Kayhan London , since 1983 .
