Khaosan Pathet Lao (KPL) is the state-run Laotian news agency . Its headquarters are in Vientiane . It was in the January 6, 1968 Viengsay in the province of Houaphanh the Pathet Lao founded.

At that time it consisted of only a dozen reporters and technicians. Their job was to collect news, process it and supply it to the Pathet Laoradio radio station and the Lao Haksat newspaper , the mouthpieces of the revolutionary movement.

Since the founding of the People's Democratic Republic of Laos on December 2, 1975, the agency has published daily news in English and French in addition to news in Lao .

In April 1979 the agency published its first issue of the quarterly magazine "Pathet Lao" and in 1987 the first, also quarterly, English version appeared. The magazine has been published monthly since 1997.

In the early stages, the messages were transmitted by means of Morse code. In the 1970s, a teleprinter was used to send messages abroad, while Morse code telegraphy continued to play a role domestically.

In the 1990s, the technical facilities were gradually modernized. Today the messaging system works with radios , computers , fax machines , email , the Internet and satellites .

The agency has offices in all provinces and counties in the country. KPL has bilateral agreements with a number of national news agencies and is a member of the News Association of the Non-Aligned Movement and OANA , an association of news agencies from UNESCO countries in the Asia - Pacific region.

KPL is the main news source in the country. It provides news to newspapers, radio and television stations. KPL is a state-owned entity and relies on limited government information.
