Ki-Yang-Yang was a movement of young Balanta women in Guinea-Bissau . Founded in the late 1980s , it campaigned for the strengthening of women's rights and questioned the powerful position of the village elders . At the same time, Ki-Yang-Yang, as one of several autonomous movements at the local level, demonstrated the weakness of the authoritarian-led state led by João Bernardo Vieira . The movement saw its decline in the 1990s.
