The Kiamaky Game Reserve is located in northwestern Iran in the East Azerbaijan Province and is one of the best protected areas in the Iranian Caucasus . It covers an area of over 957 square kilometers and has a relatively large number of the rare Persian leopards . The steep cliffs of the Kiamaky Sanctuary provide a habitat for a large population of wild goats , which in turn are prey for the leopards. The Armenian wild sheep can also be found here.

To the west of the reserve is the 972 square kilometer Marakan Conservation Area , which also houses herds of wild sheep and wild goats, but only a few leopards. Originally, this area was particularly known for numerous leopards, but in recent years several of them have been shot by foreign hunting tourists. A few kilometers to the northeast, in the border area with Azerbaijan, there is another reserve in the region, the Arasbaran Conservation Area .
