bilge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The bilge [ bɪlɡə , bɪlʧ ] is the lowest room on a ship that is directly above the ship's planks or above the keel .

The bilge collects the leakage water that has penetrated the ship's hull (for example in wooden ships ) and, in more modern ships, also condensation water , especially from the air conditioning system. This water is called bilgewater or Kieljauche . It can be pumped out with built-in bilge or bilge pumps.

Safety at sea

Good seamanship includes regular checks on the bilge and ensuring that it is clean. Bilge water contaminated with sawdust, dirt or rubbish can lead to failure / clogging of the bilge pump, which often occurs when more water is entering the ship.

environmental Protection

In modern motor-driven ships, if the prime mover is not equipped with its own bilge, the motor bilge, the bilge water is usually contaminated with oil and fuel residues ( bilge oil ) and must not simply be pumped out at sea, but requires professional treatment by someone Bilge de-oiler . The legal basis for the discharge of bilge water at sea and the construction of suitable bilge de-oilers is the resolution MEPC. 107 (49) of the International Maritime Organization . It follows that within the twelve-mile zone bilge water with an oil content of max. 15  ppm may be introduced. In special protected areas, the limit value is sometimes 5  ppm .

Bilge pig

Often, young sailors are sent to feed the bilge hog to make fun of them - an invented being that lives in the bilge. (See also Kielschwein .)
