The Kielmeyer House

The Kielmeyerhaus at Marktplatz 3 in Esslingen am Neckar is a former hospital winery .

history

The house was built in 1582 by the carpenters Jacob Johann and M. Jacob Zech and the bricklayer Hans Flachtern. It was supposed to replace the burned down wine press of the Katharinenspital, the last building remains of which it is today. The remaining buildings of the hospital stood on today's market square and were demolished in 1811.

When the Kielmeyerhaus was built, the older vaulted cellars still preserved on the property were used. On the ground floor, a large, approximately five-meter-high wine press hall was set up with two arched gate entrances framed by ornamental bands. Originally there were eight wine presses there. The house has been owned by the Kielmeyer family since the 18th century, who converted it into a residential and commercial building. The hall was destroyed in the 19th century by adding a false ceiling; one of the arches fell victim to a shop window installation. The first floor originally housed the hospital forest manager's apartment and storage rooms, with bulk floors above in the four attic floors. The upper floors were partially converted into apartments in the 19th century.

On the facade of the building are the imperial coat of arms with the chain of the golden fleece and a relief of St. Catherine under the banner Soli deo gloria . Katharina is shown between two columns and with the hospital coat of arms, sword and wheel.

The so-called black man or wine press can be seen on the southwest corner of the facade. It bears a coat of arms and the stonemason's mark Hans Flachterns. The construction date can also be read here.

The gable shows Renaissance half-timbering with curved foot struts, carved headbands and many decorative motifs such as firebucks and profiled diamonds. Three loading openings are arranged centrally one above the other, one of which still has the old lifting device with a corrugated tree.

Say

Several legends are associated with the Kielmeyerhaus. In the cellar vaults through which the Geiselbach flows, a mighty crocodile, which had once escaped from an animal show on the market square, was supposed to live, which every now and then ate up a master cooper, and the black man was said to punish thieving wine press assistants with bludgeoning.

The Kielmeyerhaus in art

The Kielmeyerhaus is the dominant house in the northern row of facades on Esslingen's market square. In 2010 the artist Renate Mildner-Müller chose the Kielmeyerhaus as a motif for her contribution to the "Esslinger Series", in which a limited edition hand-printed lithograph is published every year .
