Nambu Kijirō

General Nambu Kijirō

Nambu Kijirō ( Japanese 南部 麒 次郎 ; * September 22, 1869 ; † May 1, 1949 ) was an officer in the Imperial Japanese Army . He founded the Nambu Jūseizōsho ( 南部 銃 製造 所 , "Nambu firearms factory"; English Nambu Arms Manufacturing Co. ) His nickname was Japan's John Browning .

Nambu was born as the second son into a samurai family in Hizen-Nabeshima, now Saga Prefecture. The parents' house was very conservative and loyal to the emperor. Various pistols, machine guns and submachine guns, some of which bear his name and were used in World War II - including the Type 14 pistol - were redesigned in the Tokyo Army Arsenal and in the arms factory founded after he was retired as Lieutenant General . Nambu died of natural causes after the war ended.
