Kilbarchan Steeple

The Kilbarchan Steeple is a tower in the Scottish town of Kilbarchan in the Renfrewshire Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. An earlier classification as a Scheduled Monument was lifted in 1998.

The tower is on Steeple Street in the northwest of the city. It was built around 1775 based on a design by the stonemason David Kerr . The Kilbarchan Steeple has a square plan. There is a bronze statue above the entrance portal . It depicts the town's former bagpiper , Habbie Simpson . It was originally a wooden statue from 1822, but was replaced by the bronze one in 1922. Adjacent to the tower is a two-story community center, which in the past was also used as a school or market hall. It was added in 1782.
