history

Various sacred buildings have been located at this location since early Christian times. In the 14th century, the main church of the entire Rhinns of Islay peninsula was located there . This building was deemed too unsafe in 1824, which is why it was decided to build the new Kilchoman Church. Construction began in 1825 and completed in 1827. In the course of the new building, the existing cemetery was also expanded. In 1977 the last service was held in Kilchoman Curch.

description

The building was built in the neo-Gothic style . It measures 18.4 × 12.5 m 2 . Along the two-story nave and in the bell tower, pointed arch windows let light into the building. The square bell tower is at the northwest end of the building. It has two upper floors and ends with a crenellated platform. Some of the tower windows were closed with masonry. The church building was plastered using the traditional Harling technique and ended with a slate roof. Inside the church, a U-shaped gallery resting on wooden pillars ran along three sides of the building. The rows of pews in the nave faced the pulpit at the southeast end. Window sills as well as columns and the battlements of the church tower were covered with sandstone. The sacristy was set up on the first floor of the bell tower and was equipped with a fireplace, which is now closed.

The roof that was still in place in 1982 has since been destroyed.
