Kilfinora Tarn

The Kilfinora Tarn is a small lake on the island Heard in the southern Indian Ocean . It lies in front of the southern foothills of the Fiftyone Glacier .

Named after the lake is the steam-powered sealers Kilfinora from the South African Cape Town . After 17 crew members of the ship were stranded in 1927 as a result of a storm on Heard, the British Admiralty initiated this in 1929 as part of the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (1929–1931) led by the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson to build the Admiralty Hut , a refuge on the banks of Atlas Cove .
