The Atlas Cove is a bay on the north coast of the island Heard . It lies between the Laurens Peninsula and Rogers Head .
The name of the bay goes back to American seal hunters who have been visiting Heard Island since 1855. The name can also be found on maps of the British Challenger expedition (1872–1876), which called the island in 1874. It is named after the American tender Atlas from New London , Connecticut , who headed for the island of Heard in 1855 for a seal hunt .
