Killary Harbor ( Irish : An Caoláire Rua ) is the only fjord in Ireland . It extends over a length of about 15 to 16 kilometers and has a water depth of more than 45 meters in some places. It is on the border of Galway and Mayo counties .

The Erriff River flows into the fjord, which ends in the north of Connemara , and shortly before it falls down the Aasleagh Falls (Irish: Eas Liath ), which, like the town of Leenaun , formed the film set for "The Field" with Richard Harris . At the end of the fjord at Leenaun there are several commercially operated mussel farms. There are also isolated salmon farms in the fjord.

The Connemara Lady excursion boat operates on the fjord .
