Killenny Abbey (Vallis Dei; Glandy) was a former Cistercian abbey in County Kilkenny in the Republic of Ireland .

history

The monastery was founded between 1162 and 1165 by Dermot O'Ryan, a feudal man of the king of Leinster Dermot MacMurrough , but it was not until 1185 that it was incorporated into the Cistercian order and subordinated to the Jerpoint monastery. It thus belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . Due to the inadequate equipment of the monastery, it was not able to survive in the long run. In 1217 it became involved in the Riot of Jerpoint and in 1227 it was merged with Duiske Abbey and became the grangie of that monastery, which led to a long-running dispute between Duiske Abbey and Jerpoint Abbey over property rights. In 1525 Charles Cavenagh received the Grangie for 61 years.

Buildings and plant
